UND Boosts Engagement

University of North Dakota was ahead with mobile and it shows!

Eric MacLise | April 2019

With near-capacity crowds and eight NCAA Division 1 Championships since inception, the University of North Dakota’s Men’s Hockey team is a pride of its community. Called the “Taj Mahal of Hockey”, Ralph Engelstad Arena is an industry leader, and always finding new and exciting ways to engage their fans. In 2015, University of North Dakota (UND) recognized that fans’ smartphones were becoming a new production medium to entertain their live audiences. Since then, UND has partnered with Fannex to build live mobile engagement inventory within the UND GameDay app at Men’s Hockey events.

Most recently, UND began utilizing Fannex geofencing and beaconing technology to send targeted push messaging to fans when they arrive at the venue. When fans open the app at live events they are prompted to “Check-In” with their seat location to enter a lottery for prizing:

Once fans “Check-In” they can access a suite of interactive games including Trivia, live Polls and Fan Pics. These mobile engagements all connect back to elements of event production in real-time. UND has been smart in adding mobile components to existing activations where teams traditionally only have single-fan participation with their in-venue host. They’ve enabled mobile voting for an animated skater race on the big screen, adding a second prize giveaway for their mobile participating audience.

“Over the last few years, Fannex has helped us develop and implement an interactive experience, allowing us to enhance our in-game presentation while accomplishing digital objectives.”

– Chad Hopman, University of North Dakota

Through four seasons, Fannex activations have generated 100,000+ fan plays on mobile. These call-to-action engagements on mobile give fans a compelling reason to download the team app. As a result, total app downloads for UND GameDay have exceeded the university’s undergraduate student population (11,000). We might have to start calling UND the “Taj Mahal of Mobile”!

Fannex is a fan experience platform that adds real time control of fan mobile devices to video production systems. Producers can draw on a Fannex library of customizable games and experiences, or add a mobile element to existing activations.
